Whole House Generator

Buying a whole house generator is an increasingly attractive option for the homeowner who wants to make sure that his or her family always has power, even in the event of a electrical outage or natural disaster. Many great whole house generators are available online - search around to read reviews and find the best price on your generator.

The best whole house generator experience is that you don't even notice when the power goes out do to a storm, natural disaster, or damage to the power lines. If your grid power goes down, your generator kicks in automatically and transparently and nearly instantly provides power for your house. Aside from a brief flicker of the lights, you may not even notice that your generator is turning on! This way, you can keep running your air conditioner during a power outage in the hot summer months, and keep watching the super bowl even if a truck knocks down the power lines in your neighborhood.

The type of whole house generator you should buy depends primarily on your peak power requirements when running on generator power. If you have a huge house and want to be able to continue running everything including all of your high-power possessions like power tools and electronics, you'll need a larger generator. If you have a small house or are comfortable running only core systems like your lights during na outage, a smaller and cheaper whole house generator will probably be enough for you.

You'll also need to think about where you will locate your whole house generator. Remember that most generators run off of gas or diesel, and that you'll need to vent the exhaust fumes in a way that they never come into your house and run the risk of creating a carbon monoxide poisoning situation. This means that you can NEVER put the generator in your house, garage or basement as this quite literally can kill you because of carbon monoxide. That said, you also don't want your generator outside exposed to the elements the entire year long because you want it in top shape with you have an electrical outage. A locked outdoor shed with appropriate venting is probably the most appropriate place for your generator. In addition to the exhaust, also think about the noise: You may not want your generator located right outside your bedroom as the noise may be annoying.

In addition to the cost of buying your whole house generator, also save some of your budget for installation. To work correctly and transparently, the generator needs to be wired directly into your home's electrical box. You could set up a generator and run extension cords inside, but this won't be an elegant solution and won't provide the transparent convenience you could have with the correct installation of a whole house generator.
