Motorized Scooters
59For anyone who has difficulty getting around the house or getting out of the house for errands and meeting family and friends, motorized scooters can be a great idea. You can find a variety of motorized scooters available for purchase online or at a scooter store in your town.
The idea behind motorized scooters is simple: for many people, walking is no longer an efficient means of moving around and is either impossible, or extremely difficult, even with the assistance of a cain or a walker. It can be psychologically painful to no longer be able to comfortably move around the house or leave the house in order to meet people and get your errands done. Motorized scooters can help return this sense of independence by giving you a comfortable seat in which you can move around under electric power.
A motorized scooter can be expensive, but it's often worth it for the independence that it can help you to regain. In some cases, your insurance or health plan may cover the scooter. If nothing else works, ask your children if they can support you by making your life easier with a motorized scooter. Be sure to talk with your physician before buying motorized scooters to make sure that they are appropriate for you and the conditions you may have. In some cases, you may need to adjust your diet since you may be getting much less exercise now that you are using a scooter instead of walking.
Motorized scooters do come with some challenges. In many cases, homes, apartments and condos were not build with scooters in mind, and may have stairs that are required for entering the building, or steps inside for getting around. You may be able to get around these issues by having small ramps installed, or if one room has a step up, simply realizing that in this room you may need to depend on your old cane or walker. It's important to keep your motorized scooter charged since you definitely can't use it without power! Also be careful since it can be dangerous to children, pets, and other people if you are not able to control it well. At first, drive carefully until you learn the limits of your scooter.
You may find that using motorized scooters brings a sense of independence back to your life and allows you to keep up with your grandchildren or get out of the house for a nice meal on the town without the exhaustion and difficulty that walking with a walker or cane can often bring.
