Learning about tennis ball machines

A tennis ball machine is a device that can serve tennis balls over the net to you at almost identical speeds, spins and placement over and over. Practicing with a friend can absolutely help improve your game, but using a tennis ball machine allows you to set up a difficult shot and practice returning it over and over to improve your technique and confidence.

I've always had a very natural and strong forehand shot in tennis, but struggled with my backhand.  I always hit a bit awkwardly and I tend to avoid backhand shots because my confidence is low. With my tennis ball machine, I was able to set up several representative backhand shots and practice them over and over.  With a couple of afternoons of practice under my belt, my technique was much better and my confidenced was greatly increased!  The next time I played with friends, they were impressed with my greatly improved backhand technique, and I won the match!

Tennis Ball Machines can be a bit expensive.  If you belong to a tennis club with allows free use of their machines then you're very lucky!  For those of us with less luck, we need to choose between renting a tennis ball machine by the hour, day, or week, versus buying a tennis ball machine.  Advantages of renting your tennis ball machine include not needing to store it at home and allowing someone else to do the maintenance.  By owning your own tennis ball machine, you can practice tennis anytime and anywhere, including a public court if you bring your own machine.  You may also consider buying a used or preowned tennis ball machine.  Be sure to buy one that is in good condition and that has been well-maintained by its previous owner.
