Great Garage Ideas

Garages were of course originally intended to store cars but what use are they if you either prefer to park your car on the street or in your driveway or, as people are increasingly doing, if you don't have a car at all. Here are some good garage ideas for uses beyond cars!

One of the more common garage ideas is using it as workshop for your tools. If you have woodworking or metalworking tools or some other related hobby, the garage can be a great place to permanently or semi-permanently set up your tools to provide easy access for projects. You may find it useful to build or install a workbench on one or more sides of the garage to provide additional working space for your tools. On a related note, a garage can also be a good potting shed if you are a gardener.

Perhaps the kids have been begging for a pool table or a pingpong table. The garage can be a great game room and is often large enough to accomodate the huge games like pool or table tennis which often don't fit in other rooms in the house. Your kids may feel more comfortable if you put down some cheap carpet over the cement floor and, in the winter, a portable heater may be helpful since garages typically are unheated. The kids will love having a new game room, and will hopefully knock over stuff less often in the house! This really is one of the best garage ideas for kids.

If you truly never use it for your car, one of the most dramatic garage ideas is actually remodeling the garage to become an additional normal room of the house. A new ceiling fixture can transform a dark garage into a bright indoor room. This will be quite expensive since you'll probably need to add insulation, put in new floors, remove the garage door and add a wall, etc. This is a project only for the most advanced do-it-yourselfers, and is probably best done by professional remodelers in most cases. It can be a great way to get the family room or formal dining room you've always wanted and won't require you to move!
