Garage Prices
66Learning about Garage Prices
It's common for people living in houses without a garage to wonder about garage prices: how much would it cost to add a garage to my house so that I can park my car inside, or have a place to store my lawnmower and woodworking tools? Unfortunately adding a garage to a house is no small undertaking and consequently the garage prices are not insignificant.
The first question to ask is whether you really have room to add a garage to your property? Is there a natural place for it to fit? You should also check the zoning and permits required for your area as it may simply be impossible to build a garage according to the local building laws. You should also think about whether your new garage will be a standalone building, or whether it will be an addition to your house and accessed from one of your existing rooms. This choice will have some impact on the garage prices.
If you don't have room for a garage or the garage prices seem too high to fit your current budget, you might also think about setting up a carport tent. These are not too expensive to buy and are pretty easy to put together. They serve much the same purpose of protecting your car from the elements, but of course are not as permanent as a real garage.
Now that fewer new homes are being built, you may find that garage prices have dropped since builders have less work. Try to get bids from multiple builders and compare their garage prices in order to get the best possible deal. Make sure that you are comparing apples to apples between builders so that they are submitting bids to create the same building so that you can easily choose between them.
If you can't afford the garage prices and want something more permanent than a carport tent, you may also consider building a wooden storage shed. This may not be big enough to store your car, but is a good place to keep the lawnmower, your gardening tools, some storage boxes, etc. The nice thing about this approach is that building usually doesn't require the permits that a true garage does and can therefore be built for much less and even on lots where you would be allowed to build a true garage.
